A rainy monday night on Skye turned out to be memorable with late plans with my friend to see Sian at LAS, Isle of Skye Candles.
Sian comprises three of today’s most exquisitely gifted young Gaelic singers - Ceitlin Lilidh, Eilidh Cormack and Ellen MacDonald – accompanied by in-demand multi-instrumentalist Innes White.
With direct connections among the singers to Lewis, Skye and North Uist, their arrangements match deep feeling for traditon with stunning, boldly imaginative harmony work, which has seen them likened to The Staves and even Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Their self-titled debut album, produced by Donald Shaw, was released in 2020.
The harmonies were mesmerising and evoked emotions from the beautiful Gaelic culture. Focusing on songs promoting historic powerful women, with interludes of humorous storytelling, it was a night to remember. I finished my evening with a Raasay Whisky night cap thinking of the beautiful Gaelic culture of the west coast and the powerful historic women who have shaped it.
